10 Dollar Death Trip - Inside the Fentanyl Crisis
The fentanyl drug epidemic in North America
The world is fighting a deadly pandemic, but over in North America another heartbreaking public health crisis is still raging. A synthetic drug is killing more people than gun crime, homicide and car accidents combined.
One hundred times stronger than heroin, the opioid fentanyl is cheap, potent and can be sent through the post. These market forces have seen it replacing heroin and causing unprecedented death, destruction and misery. The death toll has disproportionately affected the homeless and already marginalized. Now, due to its strength and low cost, the drug is also starting to be mixed into party drugs, such as cocaine and cannabis - with fatal results. The documentary travels to Vancouver, the epicenter of the fentanyl epidemic to meet with health care workers, activists, fentanyl dealers and addicts. It shows some of the radical initiatives fighting the abuse of this drug, and asks what the world could face if the fentanyl epidemic spreads outside of North America.

Internet from Outer Space

The entire globe can be provided with affordable high-speed Internet from satellites in space. These newly developed mini-satellites in a low-earth orbit as well as powerful antennas and signal processing chips make this possible.
The digital revolution has radically changed the way we live and work. But more than three billion people are still offline. As with any infrastructure, fast data connections initially reach urban centers. People who live in rural areas, even in rich industrialized countries, often have to get by without reduced bandwidth. Now several consortia are competing to bridge this gap with the help of hundreds of mini-satellites in low orbit. The idea is not entirely new: 25 years ago, others already failed because of their over-ambitious plans and technical limitations. It is only now that high numbers of satellites can be produced quickly and cheaply through automation and mass production. In February 2019, the OneWeb consortium launched the first six 150-kilogram satellites into a low-earth orbit. On their way to their final orbit at an altitude of 1,200 kilometers., the satellites must pass through a dense array of GPS and Earth observation satellites as well as the space debris of the past 60 years. Collisions are not exceptional. And hundreds more mini-satellites in space will mean even more space debris in the future. Dozens of ground stations are needed around the globe to supply the numerous satellites with Internet data and receive data from space. This requires sophisticated antenna technology, which is also as yet available on the necessary scale. Not to mention the difficult regulatory challenges facing Internet providers in over 200 states and territories.

Poverty, Politics and Profit
More working Americans are struggling to make rent than at any time since the Great Depression.
FRONTLINE and NPR join forces to investigate the crisis in affordable housing and why so few are getting the help they need. In a nine-month investigation that takes them from Dallas to Miami, to an upscale resort in Costa Rica, NPR’s Laura Sullivan and FRONTLINE’s Rick Young find that just one in four households eligible for Section 8 assistance are getting it, and the nation’s signature low-income housing construction program is costing more and producing less. The team follows a money trail that raises questions about the oversight of a program meant to house low-income people. Poverty, Politics and Profit also explores the inseparability of race and housing programs in America, tracing a legacy of segregation and discrimination that began more than 80 years ago.

The Antifascists
A low intense war is being fought on the streets of Europe and the aim is on fascism. This documentary takes us behind the masks of the militant groups called antifascists. In 2013 a group of armed nazis attacks a peaceful demonstration in Stockholm where several people are injured. In Greece the neonazi party Golden Dawn becomes the third largest in the election and in Malmö the activist Showan Shattak and his friends are attacked by a group of nazis with knives and he ends up in a coma. In this portrait of the antifascists in Greece and Sweden we get to meet key figures that explain their view on their radical politics but also to question the level their own violence and militancy.

America's love affair with guns (2020) Documentary

weapons documentary

America's love affair with guns
More and more Americans are taking a stand against a widespread gun craze in the country - especially since a rampage at a Florida school left 27 dead. But they face stiff resistance from a powerful weapons lobby, above all the National Rifle Association.
Since it was founded in 1871, the National Rifle Association has gone from a shooting club to a fighter for the unrestricted right to carry firearms - a political heavyweight that influences legislation and elections through donations to parties and members of Congress and the Senate - and practically co-governs in Washington. The NRA invokes the Second Amendment of 1787, which guarantees American citizens the right to defend themselves. However, at the time of the Founding Fathers, muskets were the only common firearm. Today there are about 300 million pistols and rifles in circulation in the United States, many of them rapid-fire devices.
The most popular weapon is the AR-15, a semi-automatic assault rifle that any 18-year-old can buy in most states - without a police clearance certificate or aptitude test. As we show, even children of pre-school age are being trained to handle this weapon. It was frequently used by the perpetrators of school massacres of recent years.
The issue of gun laws divides American society. As the survivors of the 2018 Parkland rampage and other young activists call for stricter legislation and control, the gun lobby and its supporters invoke their mantra: "To stop a bad guy with a gun, you need a good guy with a gun."
In the past, all attempts to tighten US weapons laws have failed. Will the growing resistance of a generation of rampage victims finally succeed in putting a stop to America's gun madness?

What if Earth were Unique? (2020) Documentary

What if Earth were Unique?
Wonders of Earth
How likely is it that we will one day discover a planet with an ecosystem like Earth's? What if the Earth's diverse and complex life forms are unique? This documentary takes us on a guided tour that reveals the wonders of our planet.
Scientists are increasingly convinced that the presence of life on Earth is the result of a succession of happy coincidences, each one more improbable than the one before it, which when taken together nearly qualify as a miracle. Or, could it be that earthlings are the winners of some cosmic lottery with crazy odds?
While the origins of life remain shrouded in mystery, we have learned a lot about why life on our planet became possible. For decades, astronomers have been combing the universe, discovering more and more galaxies and solar systems. They've found new worlds and distant planets, but surprisingly none of these had environments that would result in an ecosystem similar to the one on Earth. A whole series of improbable cosmic and terrestrial events such as meteor strikes and volcanic eruptions must have all come together at just the right times to shape our planet. Guided by the work of astronomers, cosmologists and biologists, this documentary takes viewers on a tour that explores how our planet and the life on it came into existence. It’s a journey that’s led even the most sober of scientists to ask, "What if our world really is unique?"

Freddie Flintoff Living with Bulimia (2020) Documentary

Freddie Flintoff Living with Bulimia
In this powerful and unflinching documentary, Andrew ‘Freddie’ Flintoff goes on an acutely personal journey into the eating disorder he has kept secret for over 20 years – bulimia.
Freddie reveals how bulimia has played a part in the course of his life. He discusses his experience in visceral detail and meets specialists and young men with eating disorders across the UK. Together they challenge, with incredible honesty and humility, some of the stereotypes that men and boys in their position face – that is, suffering with a serious mental health condition that is perceived to be something ‘only girls get’ – and finally give a public voice to a much-misunderstood illness.
Experts estimate that over 1.5 million people in the UK have an eating disorder like bulimia, of which 25 per cent are male. And yet eating disorders are still considered to be illnesses that only teenage girls suffer with. As a result, boys and men with eating disorders most often live in silence with the double stigma of having a mental health condition that is not recognised in their gender.
Ultimately, Freddie must ask himself whether he needs professional treatment to tackle his eating disorder once and for all

How poor people survive in the USA (2019) Documentary

Documentary about poverty in USA

How poor people survive in the USA
Homelessness, hunger and shame: poverty is rampant in the richest country in the world. Over 40 million people in the United States live below the poverty line, twice as many as it was fifty years ago. It can happen very quickly.
Many people in the United States fall through the social safety net. In the structurally weak mining region of the Appalachians, it has become almost normal for people to go shopping with food stamps. And those who lose their home often have no choice but to live in a car. There are so many homeless people in Los Angeles that relief organizations have started to build small wooden huts to provide them with a roof over their heads. The number of homeless children has also risen dramatically, reaching 1.5 million, three times more than during the Great Depression the 1930s. A documentary about the fate of the poor in the United States today.
